 Condition:

 AVERAGE

In overall average condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature show normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. As we define 'average condition' relative the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see quite a few 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include significant nicks or dings to a wooden, metal, enamel, or chalkware object, significant wear to a painted surface, speckling on a mirror, crazing, wear to gilding, or manufacturing glaze skips in ceramic finish, significant wear to a label, and original decorative trim may be missing. If ceramic/porcelain restoration has been done, it is of museum-quality so that it is hardly discernible and would be mentioned in the listing. Average condition may also include chips or cracks in ceramic or marble, which may or may not be specifically noted in the listing.

 Item Specifics:

Clock is not in running condition and the strike is flat. The case has been shellacked and there is a chip on the bottom edge due to age and use.

Clock does not run.

Strike (Hour) Function: Strike works, but sound is weak, tinny, or otherwise less than original sound quality.

Chime (Qtr or Half Hour or Music) Function: Not applicable.

 ENFIELD

The Enfield Clock Company was founded in 1929 by C. Schatz to manufacture clocks in the manner of the German factories. Workers were brought to England from Germany in order to start production, however, the factory struggled to compete with the lower prices of imported German clocks. The entire factory was converted into a military defense plant during WWII and clock production ceased. S. Smith and Sons purchased the Enfield Clock Company in 1933, although it continued under the name Enfield until 1955, when the brand was phased out.

REGULATOR REGULATEUR / PENDULUM CLOCK

A Regulator, also Regulateur, is usually a large wall clock with a long case enclosing the dial above a long pendulum, and is noted for its time-keeping accuracy. Very elaborately carved regulator clocks are often called the Vienna Style.

Pendulum clocks use a pendulum, a swinging weight, as the timekeeping element. The pendulum clock was invented and patented by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in 1656, inspired by Galileo's investigation of pendulums (Galileo had the idea for a pendulum clock in 1637, but was not able to effectively build one). The use of the pendulum increased the accuracy of clocks enormously, from about 15 minutes per day to 15 seconds per day. Pendulum clocks remained the world standard for accurate timekeeping for 270 years until the invention of the quartz clock in 1927.

ART DECO STYLE

World War I brought a sobering end to the lavish Art Nouveau style and a new modern, streamlined aesthetic developed in the 1920s and 1930s that eventually was known as Art Deco style. After WWI, the extravagance and excessive carvings found on Victorian and Revival styles was seen as outdated. Consumers wanted simplicity in design, and at the same time were fascinated with the new technological advancements in society, including the automobile, the airplane, the radio, television and skyscrapers, such as the Chrysler building and the Empire State Building in New York City.

Early Art Deco style is marked by sweeping curves, which give the impression of speed and velocity and the aerodynamic nature of automobiles and airplanes. Art Deco style can be understood as the celebration of the Machine Age, the optimism of spirit that proclaimed the future is here brought by technology. At the same time, there was a feeling of disconnection with the past and a rebellion against societal norms during the Roaring Twenties, which was expressed by the Flappers, young women who threw off their girdles, cut their hair short, smoked, drank, and danced all night in the Jazz clubs. Such a break in tradition demanded a bold, new and dramatic style and Art Deco fit the bill.

As the Art Deco style developed, there was a shift away from sweeping curves to rectilinear lines and geometric shapes, however the shapes were often fractionated forms that mirrored the contemporary Cubist art of Pablo Picasso. Hallmarks of the Art Deco style include geometric shapes, trapezoids, zigzags, chevron patterns, a sunburst motif and the stylized use of gazelles, deer, and birds, as well as a bold and dramatic color palette. Bright green, red, orange, yellow, and blue were found everywhere, especially on the cheery dishware line called Fiestaware in the US. Pink and black was also a favorite color combination. After the stock market crash of 1929 when 25% of the US was unemployed, inexpensive Art Deco wares remained popular as the vibrant colors boosted spirits and the focus on technology and the future gave promise that things would get better.

RENAISSANCE REVIVAL: HENRY II AND HUNTING STYLES

As the middle class rose in status and wealth with the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, more people were able to afford furniture. This flattening of society in combination with technological advancements created a surge of furniture production. Improved transportation meant a greater variety of wood was available at lower costs. For the first time, furniture became accessible and affordable to the common man. From the 1830s to the end of the 19th century, furniture makers reached back to earlier historical styles, and reinterpreted them with a great deal of creativity and experimentation. Although machines were used to increase speed and productivity, most of the carvings were still done by hand. Consumers were hungry for large, ornate and heavily carved furniture that would impress their friends and family and show off their newly found wealth.

The Renaissance Revival style is marked by massive proportions and heavy, ornate carvings. Most furniture was produced in dark oak and walnut. There are actually several sub-styles that fall under the broader Renaissance Revival style and include the Henry II (Henri II) style, Hunting style, Mechelen style, and Louis XIII style.

In France, the Renaissance style is often referred to as Henry II (Henri II) style, based on the reign of Henry II (1547 - 1559), although it is surprising that the style was not named for his father, Francis I. Considered to be the great French Renaissance monarch, Francis I (1515 - 1547), a contemporary of Henry VIII in England, was a great supporter of the Arts and the Humanities. Enamored with Italian Renaissance art and architecture, he convinced Leonardo da Vinci and other great Italian artists to move to France and work at his court, decorating his many palaces and chateaux (palaces out in the country rather than in Paris) in the lush Loire Valley. He actively collected artistic works by Raphael, Michelangelo, and Titian, which were the beginning of the magnificent art collection of the French kings on display today in the Louvre in Paris. Decorative hallmarks of the Henry II style include arches, pediments, columns, finials, carved flowers, fruit, scrolls and often references to Greek and Roman mythology, including male and female heads, faces or figures.

The Hunting style developed as an exotic way to decorate the royal and aristocratic hunting lodges (the chateaux of the Loire Valley). Furniture makers specialized in detailed carvings of winged griffins, lion's heads, and trophies of the hunt, including deer, fish, eels, rabbits, birds, and dogs. Lush foliage in the form of leaves and berries were often carved along edges of buffets and on the backs of chairs, while the bases of tables were often carved to represent the beasts of the hunt: dogs, boars, deer, and foxes. 19th century consumers of the Renaissance Revival style were crazy for the massive, heavily carved and ornate Hunting style and many pieces also included intricate stained glass doors in the upper cabinets.

 CERAMIC

The word ceramic originates from the ancient Greek word keramikos, meaning potter's clay. The practice of making ceramics has been in existence for nearly 30,000 years. Clay, the primary ingredient for any ceramic, is primarily made of aluminum silicate, which is a malleable soil from crumbling rocks. Ceramics can be grouped according to the type of clay used, the temperature at which the clay is fired, and the duration of the firing.

Transferware TRANSFERWARE

Transfer printing was developed in England during the 1750s as part of the Industrial Revolution as a way to speed up the mass production process, and thereby lower the price of the goods. An image is first engraved on a copper plate, which is then inked and stamped on a piece of paper or fabric. The paper or fabric is then laid on the unglazed piece after its initial firing, much like applying a decal. The object is then glazed and fired, which permanently transfers the image to the ceramic. The manufacturer Wedgwood is generally credited with the widespread popularity of this decoration process. Flow Blue, Staffordshire, Blue Willow and some Delftware are created by use of the transfer printing process.

 Chemkefa (1969 - today)

Chemkefa is the abbreviated name of Chemisch Keramisch Fabriek, which was started by the former Sphinx employee Leendert Zwikker when the Sphinx factory closed in 1969. Located in Maastricht, Chemkefa specializes in screenprinted blue & white decorative Delftware chargers with traditional Dutch scenes, including landscapes, seascapes, and scenes from life. Perhaps the most popular design is that of a wedding couple in a horse-drawn carriage, based on a painting by Eerelman from 1839. Chemkefa also produces its own designs, including a set of four seasons plates. Following in Sphinx's footsteps, Chemkefa uses a very dark blue paint, however Chemkefa avoids the use of borders around the edges in order to simplify the transfer printing process. Chemkefa's printed mark includes the words Delfts Blauw Chemkefa made in Holland Maastricht and features a crown, a flower, a triangle, and a flask.

DELFTWARE

The European craze for blue and white Chinese export porcelain in the 17th century lead to the development of the Dutch East India Company, which imported millions of pieces of Chinese porcelain as well as other Chinese wares. In 1620, the death of Wan-Li (Ming Dynasty) interrupted the flow of goods to Europe. Dutch potters from the city of Delft quickly filled the gap in the market with their own production of blue and white ceramics that duplicated the look of Chinese export porcelain by using the tin-glazing technique learned from the Italians. The Delft potters were the first northerners to imitate the tin-glazed earthenware pottery of Italian majolica, or faience. Production of Delftware proliferated and by 1700 there were more than 30 factories in production of high-quality pieces in the city of Delft.

Delftware drew on Chinese designs for inspiration, but also developed European patterns. Decorative plates were made in abundance and featured native Dutch scenes with windmills and fishing boats, hunting scenes, landscapes, seascapes, and scenes of people in daily life. When Chinese exports re-entered the European market by 1685, they came back in color, especially in greens and pinks. This sparked the production of Polychrome Delft, which refers to the use of colors other than blue and white. Besides the popular cobalt blue on a white background, Delft potters had a full color range that consisted of yellow, orange, brown, green, purple, dark red, and black.

Despite the huge success of Delftware manufacturers, the market for Delftware eroded through the 18th century until eventually only one factory in Delft remained in existence. Joost Thooft bought the last remaining Delftware factory, De Porceleyne Fles, in 1876. Since that time, over one hundred potteries have come back into existence producing what is known as modern Delftware, which no longer uses the tin glazing method of majolica.

In the period from 1876 to 1940, many high-quality, beautiful pieces of Delftware were produced. The transfer printing process was also brought back at this time. After World War II, tourism began to play a larger role in the Dutch economy. More Delftware companies opened in the 1950s to 1970s, specializing in pieces made for the tourist trade. Delftware has been produced in Holland, Belgium, Germany, England, Japan, and the US, and is still in production today.

OUR LADY OF LOURDES, MADONNA OF LOURDES

On February 11, 1858, a 14-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed a beautiful lady appeared to her in the remote Grotto of Massabielle, outside Lourdes, France. The lady appeared to Bernadette eighteen times over the next six months and identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. Catholics believe this to be an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. She was wearing a blue sash around her waist, a rosary on her arm and had roses at her feet. The spring water from the grotto is also believed to possess healing properties and the Catholic Church has recognized 67 miracle healings from it. Saint Bernadette was canonized in 1933.

Since the apparitions, Lourdes has become one of the world's leading Catholic pilgrimage sites, with an estimated 200 million pilgrims since 1860, and 4 - 6 million visitors annually. Pope John Paul II visited the shrine twice and Pope Benedict XVI visited in September 2008 to mark the 150th anniversary.

Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object that is considered sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. The Christian religion is centered on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God.

Christianity has played a prominent role in shaping Western civilization since the 4th century. Currently Christianity has between 1.5 billion and 2.1 billion followers, representing about a quarter to a third of the world's population. With more than 1 billion members, the Roman Catholic Church is the largest church representing over half of all Christians and one sixth of the world's population.

 Condition:

 VERY GOOD

In overall very good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature show normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. As we define 'very good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include minor nicks or dings on a piece of furniture, normal separation at joints in wood due to expansion and contraction over time, all locks functioning, and all drawers and doors open or slide easily. If there has been a break in the marble, it has been so expertly repaired that it is difficult to tell. If some of the original trim has been replaced or minor restoration has been performed, it has been so expertly done that it is difficult to tell. Upholstered items may show wear consistent with age and use. EuroLux Antiques makes no representation regarding the comfort of chairs or useability for the customer's particular application.

RENAISSANCE REVIVAL: MECHELEN STYLE

The city of Mechelen, Belgium, just north of Brussels, was the capital of the Low Countries, roughly the geographic area today consisting of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, in the first half of the 16th century. The city was quite wealthy due to the highly lucrative cloth trade. However, in 1572 the city was sacked and burned and political influence was lost as the capital was moved to Brussels. The city was eventually rebuilt and it was at this time at the end of the 16th century that the tradition of furniture production in Mechelen began. The prevailing style, which is known as the Mechelen (or Mechels) style, was heavily carved with stylized foliage including leaves, berries and fruit, and typically shows carved lion's heads. Mechelen style was the Belgian interpretation of the French Henry II and Hunting styles.

Mechelen played a prominent role in Belgium during the Industrial Age in the 19th century. The first railroad system on the European continent linked Mechelen to Brussels, making Mechelen the hub of the Belgian railway network. Due to the ease of

transportation, a great demand for the heavily carved furniture, often with ornate stained glass doors, spread among 19th century consumers.

As we define 'good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include nicks or dings to a wooden, metal, enamel, or chalkware object, wear to a painted surface, speckling on a mirror, crazing, wear to gilding, or manufacturing glaze skips in ceramic finish, wear to a label, and some original decorative trim may be missing. LOUIS XV AND THE ROCOCO REVIVAL STYLE

The nephew of Napoleon, Napoleon III (1852 - 1870), Emperor of the Second Empire, has the unusual distinction of being both the last monarch of France and the first President of the French Republic. Napoleon III married the beautiful Spanish Countess, Eug‚nie de Montijo, whose aristocratic extravagance in dress and jewels reflected her ornate personal taste in furniture and decorative arts, and influenced French furniture makers to reach back to the designs from the glorious court of Louis XV (1715 - 1774) at Versailles for inspiration, creating the Rococo Revival style.

The extreme level of exuberant extravagance that blossomed under the reign of Louis XV and his favorite mistress, Madame du Pompadour, is known as the Rococo style. The word Rococo is thought to be a combination of the French rocaille, or shell, and the Italian barocco, or Baroque style. The rounded extravagance of the Rococo Revival style, enormously popular in the 19th century, was based on the original 18th century style. Hallmarks of this style, also known as the Louis XV style, include detailed carvings of birds, flowers (especially roses) and leaves, fruit, and shells. Furniture overflowed with massive carvings and grandiose S and C curves. The cabriole leg, which means a knee leg with concave rounded ankle, was very popular and is also a trademark of the Louis XV style. Rosewood and walnut were popularly used in the Rococo Revival style, along with a great interest in white marble for vanities, nightstands, and parlor tables.

As furniture began to be created cooperatively in workshops, the practice of signing pieces (required by law from 1743 to 1789) was not as prevalent. Most French pieces from the 19th century do not have maker's marks or signatures.

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus of Nazareth (2 BC - 36 AD), also known as Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity and is revered by most Christian churches as the Son of God and the incarnation of God. The principal sources of information regarding the life of Jesus and His teachings are the four canonical gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) in the New Testament. Biblical scholars agree Jesus was a Galilean Jew, who was regarded as a teacher and healer. He was baptized by John the Baptist and crucified in Jerusalem under the order of Pontius Pilate. Christian views of Jesus center on the belief that he is divine, is the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and that he was resurrected after his crucifixion. His mother was the Virgin Mary, also known as Our Lady or the Madonna.
